Berry Picking

I know that I mentioned that we went blueberry picking earlier in the week.  We have a local farm that lets you pick fruit and vegetables, and we've wanted to go for a long time!  Tuesday seemed like the perfect day to go!  Despite being a little hot, we had a great time.  It was a fun activity for us to do while Jared, Cliff, Chase, and Erin were still in town.

Oh, beautiful Virginia...

I haven't picked berries in years!
We each got a bucket, and picked away to our heart's desire.

We have had so much rain here over the past few months.  It's been great for our plants, and it's definitely made our berries ripen much sooner!  A few of the blueberries were still green, but many of them were already blue.  This farm had so many rows upon rows of blueberries.  We wandered around for a good hour filling up two galloons of blueberries.

It was $20 for a gallon (equals $2.50 a pint), and I think that's a great deal!  A few blackberries were ripe, and they let us pick two pints of those to top off our gallons of blueberries.  This farm will have raspberries at the end of July, and I cannot wait to go back.  Raspberries are my favorite berry!

Yesterday we had a cookout dinner with friends, and Mathis made two blueberry pies for us to take.  They turned out so good, and it was a fun way to use some of our berries.  We'll definitely freeze some of the berries, and I cannot wait to use them in my green monster smoothies. :)

I love the summer season in Virginia, and I cannot wait to watch more fruits and vegetables come into season.
